A jury recently awarded more than $49 million in a lawsuit that was filed in relation to a car and truck accident that resulted in the permanent injury of a police officer, now paralyzed, and the death of one person, the man who was pulled over by the police on the highway.
According to the local newspaper, the jury awarded $39 million in damages to the police officer and his wife for the paralyzing injuries he suffered in the December 2007 crash. The police pulled over a motorist while traveling on the freeway when a truck slammed into them, injuring the officer (who is now a quadriplegic) and killing the driver of the car that was pulled over by the police. Parents of the other driver was awarded $10.2 million for the loss of their child in the car wreck.
Investigations revealed that the truck driver was driving the truck while intoxicated and transporting marijuana. The truck operator pleaded guilty to charges of intoxication and transporting illegal drugs, and the driver of the truck was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2008.
