Governor of Kentucky Wants a Crackdown on Nursing Home Abuse

According to the Kentucky New Era, the Governor of Kentucky wants a crackdown on nursing home abuse.

Governor Steve Beshear is ordering state officials to take immediate steps to rectify the ongoing problem with nursing home abuse in Kentucky. In October, a report was released that recommends more training on elder abuse and neglect to be provided to prosecutors and law enforcement officials.

This comes on the heels of an ongoing series in the Lexington Herald-Leader where it was discovered that over a 3-year period only 7 of the 107 citations issued at nursing homes in Kentucky resulted in criminal prosecution. 

These citations involved serious injuries including 5 broken bones, 2 amputations and 30 hospitalizations. Even more troubling were the deaths of 18 patients. 

A new system, similar to the one used to protect children who are abused and neglected, will be instituted for elder victims.

It's an unfortunate reality but many nursing homes will take in patients despite not having the ability to properly take care of them, just for financial gain.
