Kentucky State Police are beginning to release more information relating to the FedEx truck crash that killed three people in a SUV on I-65 in Hardin County, near Louisville, early Wednesday morning. According to the police, Victor Chacon Sr. was driving the family's SUV when the car was hit from behind by a FedEx truck. The fatal car accident occurred when the FedEx semi truck, which was pulling two trailers, bumped into the SUV that the seven family members were driving in together.
The family was heading back home to Chicago, Illinois, after they attended a wedding in Florida, and as they were driving through Kentucky the SUV was rear ended by the FedEx tractor trailer truck. The collision resulted in the tragic deaths of three young family members who were passengers in the SUV. Among the victims of the truck and car accident were two daughters, a 10-year old and an 11-year old, who were reportedly killed instantly when the SUV was bumped into by the FedEx truck hauling two trailers. Also killed was Victor Chacon Jr., the 26-year old family member who was helping his family travel home from his wedding. His new bride is a widow now just days after their wedding.
The other four people in the SUV who were injured in the accident, two children and two adults, and airlifted from the scene by helicopter to University of Louisville hospital and Kosair Children's hospital. The children’s mother, Melissa, was released Thursday from University hospital, and Victor Sr. is still hospitalized in fair condition. According to a relative, the 2-year old daughter, who was also a passenger in the SUV, is in critical condition and almost didn't make it through the night. The infant suffered serious multiple injuries, including a serious brain trauma, broken ribs, and two broken legs. Their son, Victor III, 5-years old, also suffered serious multiple injuries, including brain trauma, broken spinal bones, and is scheduled to undergo a neck operation. According to medical reports, due to the truck-SUV accident, there is a grave possibility that the young boy may be paralyzed for life due to severe injuries to his legs.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the accident. So far, no criminal charges have been filed against George Grimes, 31-years old, the FedEx truck driver who was operating the semi truck that hit the SUV. Police are still trying to determine whether Grimes, of Louisville, was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash. The FedEx driver was not hurt in the accident.
