How do you test for or diagnose bedsores or pressure sores?

A: Bedsores or pressure sores are usually unmistakable, even in the initial stages, however, the doctor will most likely order blood tests in order to check the nutritional status and overall health of the patient. Depending on the circumstances, the doctor may also administer other tests.

When the patient has a wound that does not improve - even with intensive treatment - or, the person suffers from chronic pressure sores, the doctor might decide to remove a small sample of tissue for testing. The tissue may be cultured for unusual bacteria or fungi. The tissue may also be checked for cancer, which is a risk in people with long-standing wounds.
