What are the general symptoms of cerebral palsy?

A: Generally, a child with cerebral palsy will show symptoms during the first three years of life. A person with cerebral palsy may show some of the following symptoms:

    •    Achieves developmental milestones at a later age than peers
         (including crawling, walking, or speaking);
    •    Crawls in an unusual way;
    •    Has abnormal muscle tone & the child slouches while sitting
         (ability to tighten & relax muscle automatically when required);
    •    Has difficulty feeding &/or sucking;
    •    Lies down in awkward positions;
    •    Can be easily startled;
    •    Favors one side of the body over the other side of the body;
    •    Has overdeveloped or underdeveloped muscles
         (movements are floppy or stiff);
    •    Has bad coordination and balance (ataxia);
    •    Has involuntary &/or slow writing movements (athetosis);
    •    Muscles are stiff & contract abnormally (spastic paralysis condition);
    •    Has hearing problems;
    •    Has issues or problems with eyesight;
    •    Has problems relating to bladder control;
    •    Has bowel movement control problems;
    •    Has seizures;
    •    Has problems swallowing; and/or
    •    Has limited range of movements or motion.
