A: Ataxic cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the cerebellum. The cerebellum controls balance and coordination and coordinates the actions for different muscles. Ataxic cerebral palsy typically affects all four limbs of an infant. The most significant condition of ataxic cerebral palsy are tremors. These tremors typically increase when a child tries to perform voluntary movements such as reaching for an object.
Several treatments for ataxic cerebral palsy include drugs such as benzodiazepine, botulinium toxin (botox) and primidone. Cooling techniques are currently being reviewed as an effective therapy.
