A: Spastic quadriplegia is a severe form of cerebral palsy characterized by the lack of a child to be able to move or feel its arms, legs and possibly some other body parts. Quadriplegia in the cerebral palsy context is caused by an injury to the spinal cord. Children affected by spastic quadriplegia normally have mental retardation, problems with muscle control of the mouth and tongue which can cause difficulty speaking. In some sever cases children can suffer from uncontrollable shaking known as hemiparetic tremors.
An additional problems associated with quadriplegic cerebral palsy is fluid buildup. This condition is often treated with diuretics and steroids to decrease fluid buildup in the spine. Children often suffer from hardened feces which can cause an increase in blood pressure. Breathing difficulties and and autonomic dysreflexia are additional concerns.
