The Right Way to Tie One on This Holiday Season

This is a unique time of year. From Thanksgiving weekend through New Year’s Day, it seems like there is always a party to go to or a festive event to enjoy. Many of these occasions include alcohol, which can be enjoyable if it is consumed responsibly—or deadly if it consumed by drivers.

MADD Wants You to Tie One On

Every year since 1986, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has run its Tie One On For Safety Campaign. The campaign encourages drivers to make safe decisions and to refrain from driving under the influence during the holiday season. Specifically, MADD encourages you to:

  • Tie on, or display, a red ribbon in your car to remind others to use a designated driver.
  • Host safe parties by including non-alcoholic beverages, by arranging for transportation for your guests, or by letting your guests stay over.
  • Designate your own non-drinking driver before the party or event begins.
  • Use social media to help spread the word that drunk driving is deadly and can be avoided.

According to MADD, two out of every three people will be involved in a drunk driving crash during their lifetimes. Since MADD was founded in 1980, the number of drunk driving accident deaths in the United States has been cut in half. It is possible to prevent drunk driving fatalities and awareness campaigns, such as the Tie One On For Safety campaign, can help.
