
December 9, 2011 – Louisville, Ky. – Injuries incurred on 4 middle school students after their school bus was hit by a pick-up truck on Thursday, December 8.
Wave 3 reports that the accident happened at the intersection of Greenwood Road and the Greenbelt Highway. According to MetroSafe dispatchers, JCPS bus #9919 entered the intersection and had the right of way when a pick-up truck failed to obey a traffic signal and went through a red light, striking the bus’s rear wheel-well.
The school bus was carrying 50 students to Frost Middle School at the time of the accident. Reports indicate that 4 of the students had to be transported to Kosair Children’s Hospital following the accident.
Officials said that the children were taken to the hospital “to be checked out.”
The identity of the pick-up’s driver has not been released.
Whether or not charges will be filed in connection with this accident is unknown.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Kentucky Crash Statistics, there were 791 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Kentucky.
