In a report from Cardiovascular Business, a new study shows that despite efforts to increase patient safety, medical errors occur in 30% of hospital admissions.

The study appeared in the April issue of Health Affairs and indicated that medical errors in hospital admissions took place at rates 10 times higher than previous estimates.

These medical errors led to adverse events in 393 of the 795 patients reviewed. This represents a rate of 33.2%. Additionally, some patients were the victim of more than 1 adverse event.

Patients who suffered an adverse event faced a longer stay in the hospital, required more care and had a higher rate of mortality.
