Four teenagers from southern Kentucky were on their way to a Christmas parade when they were killed in a car accident. According to Kentucky State Police, the driver of the car lost control on a slippery road and crashed into a coal truck.
The driver of the car swerved into oncoming traffic on U.S. 25 in Pineville. The accident took place on Saturday, December 6, 2008. Police have said that drugs and alcohol were not involved and that all four teens were wearing their seatbelts.
“It’s always hard when you lose one student, much less four,” said Bell County High School Principal Jeff Saylor in an interview with the Herald-Leader. This accident follows another one that killed two students and two graduates from the same high school last January.
Daniel Earl Campbell Smith, 15, of Blackmont, twins Jessica Nicole Ingram and Wesley Ingram, 16, of Pineville and Jonathan Miracle, 18, of Miracle, were all killed in the tragic accident. Miracle was driving the southbound Toyota Yaris at the time of the crash.
State Police believe that the slick roads caused Miracle to lose control of his vehicle, which crossed into the northbound lane, hitting a coal truck driven by Dwight Robinson Jr., 34, of Tyner.
Smith and the Ingram twins were scheduled to participate in the Christmas parade. They were members of the Bell County High School Air Force ROTC and were supposed to march in the parade. Miracle had graduated last year from Bell County High School, said Saylor.
Grief counselors were set to be available to students on Monday. Saylor said that the counselors come from other schools within the district, as well as local clergy.
The senior Junior ROTC instructor, Col. Barry Tanner, called the four teenagers “good kids” who were on their way to a Christmas parade in Middlesboro. “They were looking forward to showing their stuff at the parade. So it’s our loss and theirs,” said Tanner.
