November 3, 2011 - Louisville, Ky. - A freshman student at Louisville's Shawnee High School was struck by a car as she was traveling to school.
The report from WAVE 3 says the female student was walking in the crosswalk near 4018 W. Market Street near the school when she was struck by a vehicle. The incident took place around 7 a.m. on Wednesday, October 26.
Emergency services were contacted and the 9th grader was transported to Kosair Children's Hospital for evaluation and a precautionary checkup. A report indicates that she is stable. Her identity has not been released.
There has been no word from police on the identity of the driver and whether or not any charges are going to be filed in the incident. Meanwhile, students should be mindful when traveling to and from school on foot in the early morning hours, especially during the dark and wet winter mornings.
Based on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Kentucky Crash Statistics, there were 791 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Kentucky.
