
November 4, 2011 - Louisville, Ky. - Several fourth graders along with teachers and a bus driver were hospitalized following a crash involving a tractor trailer and school bus on Thursday, November 3.
WHAS11 reports that the accident happened on Interstate 65 as a school bus was taking students on a field trip to Mammoth Cave National Park.
According to authorities, a tractor trailer was attempting to pass the school bus when, due to causes unknown, the school bus went off of the roadway and overturned.
The students, teachers, and bus driver had to be transported to hospitals. Though several were only treated for cuts and bruises, hospital officials also said that many of the students suffered broken bones. A possible concussion and a back injury were also reported.
The tractor trailer drove off after the accident. Police are still searching for the truck's driver and truck, which has only been described as a white tractor trailer. The crash is under ongoing investigation.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Kentucky Crash Statistics, there were 791 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Kentucky.
