February 7, 2012 – Louisville, Ky. – A man has been charged with DUI and with murder following a fatal single-vehicle car accident on Sunday, February 5.
WHAS11 reports that the crash happened at about 11:30 p.m. on Interstate 71, near the Watterson Expressway split. Officials said that a Corvette was travelling northbound at an excessive rate of speed when it swerved off of the roadway.
Dwight Mitchell with the Louisville Metro Police said that the Corvette then overturned multiple times or drove a distance off of the roadway. The Corvette ended up on its roof.
A passenger in the vehicle, Michael Carr, 49, was killed in the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Corvette’s driver, Robert Kempf, 51, of Nashville, was immediately charged with murder. DUI charges were added after Kempf told police that he had been drinking prior to the accident.
Kempf has an extensive arrest record in Louisville. The record includes 3 DUI charges, a revoked license, assault and drug-related charges dating back to 1986.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Kentucky Crash Statistics, there were 791 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Kentucky.
