October 11, 2011 - Louisville, Ky. - A man was fatally injured when his motorcycle crashed on Sunday night, October 9.
WHAS11 reports that the accident happened at about 11:15 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Newburg Road. According to police, the motorcycle was travelling south on the roadway when its driver lost control as he attempted to negotiate a turn.
The man that was operating the motorcycle suffered fatal injuries in the accident and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Reports indicate that the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred.
The victim's identity has not yet been released to the public. Police have identified him only as a man in his 50's.
Officials said that the motorcycle was travelling at an excessively high rate of speed when it crashed. They also have reason to believe that the man was under the influence of alcohol.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Kentucky Crash Statistics, there were 791 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Kentucky.
