National Campaign to Improve Patient Safety Launched in April

The Safe Patient Project reports that a national campaign to improve patient safety was launched in April. This campaign is called the "Partnerships for Patients" with the primary goal of lowering incidences of medical negligence and harm in hospitals.

This collaborative effort between the federal government, hospitals, community organizations and healthcare providers aims to set goals and make patient safety a priority.

However there is also the hope more effort will go into making it mandatory that a hospital's performance is reported publicly.

Every year millions of Americans are injured or become ill as a result of medical errors and hospital infections. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that almost 2 million people in the U.S. develop an infection in a hospital every year. 

A new poll shows 77% of respondents had fears of becoming ill because of a hospital infection, 71% were concerned about becoming the victim of a medication error and 65% had concerns about surgical errors.
