WDRB reports that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is recommending a nationwide ban on cell phones including hands-free models.
The recommendation comes after a fatal accident in August 2010, involving a 19-year-old driver who was texting minutes before he struck the back of a tractor trailer. It caused a pileup which killed a driver and a student on a school bus, and injured 38 more in Missouri.
The NTSB does not have the jurisdiction to mandate such a ban; however, their recommendations are taken into consideration by lawmakers and federal regulators. To them it is not enough that texting while driving is banned but that any type of distracted driving is stopped.
Distracted driving is becoming an increasing problem, as technology continues to evolve. Cell phones and navigational systems are used for a variety of reasons. Inputting data, checking Facebook, email and even surfing the web are other types of activities being done behind the wheel.
If you or someone you love was seriously or fatally injured by a distracted driver, you may be entitled to compensation. You should talk to a Kentucky personal injury attorney to learn what your rights are. An attorney will determine if you contain a legitimate claim worth pursuing.
