In a seven day span of time, nine people were killed in separate crashes on Kentucky roadways. According to preliminary statistics, nine different accidents resulted in nine deaths from February 9th to February 15th.
Eight of the accidents involved motor vehicles and according to reports, six of the accident victims were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crashes. There were several single-vehicle accidents in the counties of Bourbon, Hancock, Harlan, Jefferson, Kenton, Larue, Logan and Washington. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in two of these accidents.
A motorcycle accident in Madison County resulted in the death of one victim who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. Bruce Mounce, 56, of Paint Lick, was driving his motorcycle at approximately 2:15 PM northbound when he approached a sharp curve. At the same time, a Pike Electric Company truck, driven by Tony Bowling, 44, of Booneville, was heading toward the same curve.
Police said that Mounce lost control of his motorcycle and was ejected. The motorcycle hit the side of the truck, pinning Mounce under the left front tire of the vehicle. Bowling tried to avoid the accident by steering his truck into the ditch line.
Since the beginning of 2009, 78 people have been killed on Kentucky roadways, according to preliminary statistics. However, this number is lower than 2008, which showed seven more deaths during the same time period. There have been 19 traffic fatalities resulting from alcohol-related accidents in Kentucky. Statistics have also shown that 40 victims were not wearing their seat belts during the collisions.
Four pedestrians have been killed in Kentucky since the beginning of this year.
