TOYOTA AND LEXUS SUDDEN ACCELERATION RECALL.
Over the past decade drivers of Toyota and Lexus vehicles have complained that their vehicles have suddenly accelerated, for no apparent reason, and they have been unable to control them. Estimates are that this problem has caused 19 deaths. The most famous accident occurred in San Diego in August 2009, when a Lexus sedan driven by an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer suddenly accelerated to over 100 mph before crashing and killing all four occupants.
Despite the length of time in which Toyota has known about this problem, it has been slow to acknowledge the problem and strive for a real solution. At first, Toyota blamed the problem on driver error and tried to prevent any serious investigation by the federal government. When that didn’t work, Toyota argued that the problem was caused by floor mats getting stuck on accelerator pedals, hoping that they could get away with the relatively cheap fix of replacing people’s floor mats. Soon, however, it became clear that even people who had taken the floor mats out of the cars were experiencing sudden accelerations.
More recently, Toyota has tried to point the finger at another company that makes the pedal assemblies that go in Toyota vehicles. But it appears that the main culprit may be Toyota’s electronic throttle control. Under increasing pressure from Congress, federal regulators and its customers, Toyota has only very recently admitted that this problem will not go away with a “band-aid” solution.
It is clear Toyota has known of this problem for quite some time before advising their consumers.
