December 14, 2011 – According to a report from Medline Plus, opioid painkiller prescriptions have more than doubled in treating chronic stomach pain. A new study found this increase to have occurred between the years 1997 and 2008.

Opioid painkillers are a common source of over prescription in the United States. They can also lead to dependence and the potential for a drug overdose.

Researchers from the study are concerned with the increase of prescriptions being written at outpatient clinics, especially because there isn’t much evidence to support that opioids can treat chronic stomach pain.

Some of the risks of using opioids for an extended period of time to treat chronic stomach pain include:
  • constipation;
  • vomiting;
  • nausea; and
  • worsened pain.
However, doctors don’t usually have other options because this common condition is many times incurable. Yet the answer isn’t necessarily in prescribing a painkiller, either.
The issue of over prescription in the United States is a serious one. If you believe that you were the victim of this as a result of medical negligence, you could be entitled to compensation. You should speak with a Louisville medication error lawyer as soon as possible.
