Have you tried talking to your mother about the situation? See what’s going on with her. Maybe she’s been having problems with one of the staff members or residents. Has she recently gotten a new roommate? Has the activity program changed, or has someone been pressuring her to participate when she doesn’t want to? So many things could be causing her discontent.

If talking to her isn’t enlightening, talk to her caregivers. See if they have a clue about the change in her behavior.

Your next resource is your mother’s doctor. Ask him if there has been a change in her medication or in her health that could explain her behavior. Perhaps the doctor can recommend a course of action to address the change, such as an adjustment in one of her prescriptions or tests to determine whether a new medical condition has arisen.
