Whitley County Kentucky police reportedly received several 9-1-1 calls around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 24, 2012. Callers allegedly told 9-1-1 dispatchers that a driver was traveling the wrong way on the interstate. Specifically, the car was allegedly travelling southbound in the northbound lanes near exit 15.

Police officers were dispatched to the scene in response to the calls. However, it is alleged that the driver hit four vehicles in the time that it took officers to get to the scene. Then, around exit 12, the car that was traveling the wrong way reportedly collided head on with another vehicle.

Whitley County EMS transported three people in the car that was hit head on to Baptist Regional Medical Center for treatment. Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening and their identities were not immediately reported in the media.

The driver who was allegedly drunk and driving the wrong way has been identified as 41-year-old Angela Vannatter of Eaton Town Road. Ms. Vannatter was charged with a DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. She is also expected to face additional charges in connection with these accidents. Ms. Vannatter’s passenger, 24-year-old Elizabeth Paul of Rockholds, was also arrested and charged with alcohol intoxication. Police report that there were open alcohol containers in plain sight in the vehicle at the time they arrived at the accident scene.
