Every year, children of older parents scan lists of the worst KY nursing homes, hoping that their loved ones won’t be at risk of abuse in their twilight years. These families can rest slightly easier this year in the knowledge that three Kentucky facilities have improved so remarkably that they have been removed from a government watchlist.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services compiles a list of nursing homes that are considered “Special Focus Facilities.” These homes have had a number of violations in standard of care, and are being monitored for any future patient mistreatment. In order to be removed from the list, a facility must sustain significant improvement through two standard survey periods (about 12 months).
The following facilities have recently graduated from the Special Focus list:
- Fountain Circle Care and Rehabilitation Center in Winchester, KY
- Johnson Mathers Nursing Home in Carlisle, KY
- Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation (Rosewood) in Bowling Green, KY
While removal from the list indicates a positive change, it does not mean that all problems in quality of care have been resolved. In fact, relatives who are currently placed in a Special Focus nursing home may be more likely to have their abuse detected, as these facilities are inspected twice as often as other nursing homes.
