Nearly 1 in 4 Surgeons are in Midst of Medical Malpractice Litigation

Posted on Dec 30, 2011

According to a report from the New York Times, nearly 1 in 4 surgeons are in the midst of medical malpractice litigation.

The Journal of the American College of Surgeons recently surveyed more than 7,000 surgeons in which they learned that almost 1 in 4 had been sued. Dependent on the practice and specialty, other studies have estimated that 75 percent to 99 percent of doctors can expect to be at least threatened with a lawsuit over the course of a lifetime.

The stress of being sued can lead to burnout, which increases the risk of making a medical mistake. This puts them right back where they started: the potential of facing a medical malpractice lawsuit.

Many experts believe that one of the best ways to prevent medical errors is for better communication between healthcare professionals and their patients.

Medical malpractice can be difficult to prove. This is why you may need the help of a Louisville, KY malpractice attorney if you believe medical negligence caused you or a loved one to suffer injuries.
