DePuy Orthopedics ("DePuy") finally announces its recall of hip implant models known as ASR XL Acetabular and ASR Hip Resurfacing systems - after much criticism for not having earlier addressed the two years' worth of complaints that the ASR hip failed in patients, and required costly and painful revision surgeries. On August 26, 2010, DePuy, a unit of Johnson & Johnson, announced the recall of its hip implants, which studies are showing may require up to one of every eight patients to undergo revision surgery due to its high early failure rate with the DePuy ASR artificial hip.
To date, there are more than 30,000 patients worldwide who have undergone the ASR hip implant surgery. DePuy's recall of its hip implants was issued just moments after the company stated it was phasing out the artificial hip implant, however, a significant reason for the phase out was that the implants resulted in at least two years of complaints that the ASR hip was failing in patients, and required costly and painful revision operations.
Orthopedic surgeons and physicians have expressed concern and dismay at DePuy for not having halted sales of its implants sooner. DePuy has reportedly blamed surgeons for the hip implant device failures in patients, and claimed that the surgeons were implainting the implants improperly. In response, some surgeons have stated their belief that the implant device contains a design flaw or defect.
DePuy Hip lawsuit have been filed by patients seeking compensation for their pain, suffering, and other physical injuries, cost of replacement surgery, and other financial difficulties as a result of the failure of their DePuy hip implant. The complaints include charges that DePuy concealed that its ASR hip implant was defective or flawed from patients and physicians.
