Tammy Renee Brewer, a Louisville ambulance driver, was charged by a grand jury with murder and driving under the influence in an accident that killed a patient being transported to the hospital.
The tragic Louisville accident occurred in April 2008. Vickey Whobrey, a 57-year-old woman, was being taken to the hospital for a persistent nose bleed when the ambulance crashed in Shively, a Louisville suburb. The patient was taken by a different ambulance to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. A coroner’s report shows that Whobrey died from injuries sustained in the accident.
According to Shively police, 36-year-old Brewer told them that she was turning off the ambulance lights, looked up and saw a pedestrian, then tried to swerve and hit a utility pole. A police report indicated that Brewer was given a blood test following the accident, but it did not state the results.
Brewer was also charged with assault, driving under the influence, wanton endangerment and criminal mischief.
A lawsuit was also brought against Brewer and the city of Louisville on behalf of Whobrey’s estate. The suit alleged negligence. The city of Louisville is requesting to be removed from the lawsuit due to sovereign immunity.
Brewer was suspended without pay following the indictment.
