November 8, 2011 - Albany, Ky. - WAVE 3 reports that Aleigha Duvall, 5, was out trick-or-treating on Halloween night when she was struck by a pickup truck. Duvall was crossing the street when she entered the path of a truck driven by Kevin Haddix, 45.
Police are investigating the accident and stated that Haddix was wearing a seatbelt and was uninjured from the collision. Duvall was rushed to the University of Kentucky hospital where she passed away from her injuries the next day on Tuesday, November 1. Currently, no charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
Child safety while crossing streets is important year-round, but even more so on Halloween night. Young children should always be accompanied by an adult and travel in groups when crossing roads. By taking precautions to increase visibility and awareness while walking near darkened roads you can reduce the risk of a pedestrian accident both for yourself and your loved ones.
Based on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Kentucky Crash Statistics, there were 791 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Kentucky.
As a service to our readers, we will occasionally publish blogs about serious or fatal traffic accidents in our region. We do this to raise awareness of the types of conditions and factors that commonly lead to severe injuries or death as a result of Kentucky vehicle accidents.
