October 12, 2011 - Lebanon, Ky. - A head-on accident killed a man and critically injured a teenager on Sunday, October 9.
WLKY reports that the accident happened at about 7 p.m. on Kentucky 2154. According to Kentucky State Police troopers, a vehicle was travelling on the roadway when it drifted across the center line and into the path of a second vehicle driving in the opposite direction. The 2 vehicles then collided head-on.
The second vehicle's driver, James Tharp, 70, of Loretto, was fatally injures in the accident and died at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle that did the drifting, Michael Wheatley, 17, of Lebanon, was critically injured in the crash. Wheatley had to be flown to University Hospital for treatment.
There has been no word on whether or not charges will be filed in connection with this accident. Officials said that alcohol does not appear to have been a factor. The accident remains under investigation.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Kentucky Crash Statistics, there were 791 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Kentucky.
