Henry County Semi-Truck Crashes Causes Serious Delays

An accident along Kentucky’s Interstate 71 in Henry Country involving a semi-truck caused the closure of the roadway resulting in long delays. The Northern Kentucky accident resulted in long delays for morning commuters for approximately three hours when both sides of the interstate were closed.

The incident took place at approximately 4:30 AM on Thursday morning, October 1, 2009 along the northbound portion of the interstate at the Pendleton exit in Henry County.

Kentucky State Police report that the driver of a tractor-trailer, who was experiencing mechanical problems, attempted to pull to the right shoulder of the interstate. The incident occurred when a semi-truck filled with motor oil swiped the tractor-trailer. The driver of the tractor-trailer reported that he had not been able to fully pull over his vehicle to the shoulder, leaving part of it exposed.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was setting-up orange emergency cones when the semi-truck hit the tractor-trailer, causing it to slam into the median and bursting into flames.

“It went up like a mushroom bomb,” Lovelace, the only witness, said. “It exploded. It was the most amazing think I’d ever seen in my life.”

Reports do not indicate that the driver of the tractor-trailer suffered any injuries resulting from the crash. However, the driver of the semi-truck and one passenger were both taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Though, the accident is still under investigation, Kentucky State Police say that they do not expect to file any charges.
