According to a report from Health News, health advisors are recommending revised labels for birth control pills because of blood clot risks.
The popular new generation of birth control pills could put users at an increased risk of dangerous blood clots. While the risk has always been present, it is found to be even greater for the new generation of pills that contain a compound, drospirenone. This compound is found in Bayer AG’s Yasmin and Yaz.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been advised that the current labeling is too difficult for consumers to understand. Although they believe the benefits outweigh the risks, it has been decided that the labels need to have clearer warnings.
Yasmin and Yaz have been linked to permanent disabilities and death. The FDA conducted its own study earlier in the year where they found that the risk of developing arterial or venous thrombotic events was twice as likely with Yasmin, in comparison to older versions of birth control.
