According to a new study by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Kentucky ranks 11th in the country when it comes to trucking company safety violations and has more offenses than most other states.
A Kentucky truck accident can be especially devastating, accounting for 12 percent of all fatal accidents every year across the nation. When a truck is involved in an accident, there is a greater likelihood that the outcome will be severe, due to the shear size and weight of these vehicles.
Lieutenant David Jude of the Kentucky State Police told ABC 36 News that “a lot of times there are safety violations with the brakes on commercial vehicles. This can go from just out of adjustment to an inoperable brake.”
Jude also said that truckers also have a responsibility to keep their trucks safe and operate their vehicles according to the law. If they follow these guidelines, the number of truck fatalities should go down in Kentucky.
Truck accidents are often preventable. Christopher Oakford with AAA Blue Grass said that drivers should be aware of trucks’ blind spots and the amount of time it takes to stop a commercial vehicle.
