A Louisville accident involving a police chase ends in the death of a 2-year-old child. The incident took place at approximately 8:30 PM on Friday evening, November 6, 2009.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began after police attempted to make a traffic stop. Miller Lee Smith Jr., 33, fled police near a Louisville neighborhood after police had pulled him over. Police found his vehicle flipped over approximately five miles outside of Louisville in a wooded area off of Middleground Road.
There were three passengers involved in the accident, an adult male, a 2-year-old female and a 3-year-old male. Smith and the unidentified male passenger were taken to Jefferson Hospital and treated for injuries.
The 2-year-old, Alike Smith, was found on the ground beside the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The unidentified 3-year-old boy was found approximately 40 feet from the overturned car. He was airlifted to Medical College of Georgia Hospital and treated from broken bones and a concussion. He is in stable condition.
According to authorities, Smith was arrested for vehicular homicide. He also faces ten other charges that include injury by a vehicle, hit and run, reckless driving, and DUI.
The adult passenger was not charged and was released from the hospital.
The incident is still under investigation by local authorities.
