December 9, 2010 - Louisville, Ky. - A bicyclist was struck by a car on November 17 at an intersection in Louisville, the Courier-Journal.com has reported.
Ian Ritchie, who owns the delivery service, SoupBycycle, injured his back and received treatment at Baptist Hospital East. He was discharged from Baptist on November 18.
Ritchie was at Ewing and Frankfort avenues waiting for the traffic light to change when a woman in a sedan struck his delivery trailer from behind. Ritchie was pushed forward a few feet and his bike's saddle drove into his lower back.
The impact was more than "a tap," Ritchie said.
Based on Ritchie's side of the story, the driver asked if he was OK and he told her no. He then asked for her car insurance information and she drove around him and left the scene of the bicycle collision.
He managed to jot down the number on her license plate, which he reported to the police. It is unknown whether the police were able to contact the driver.
Ritchie has been delivering soup since he lost his kitchen manager job nearly a year ago, and his business has since expanded. His trailer is more than 16 feet in length and he had flashing taillights during the accident.
In wake of the accident, his doctor has advised him to stop riding his bicycle for a week.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Kentucky Crash Statistics, there were 791 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Kentucky.
