In Louisville, three people have died in crashes that occurred on icy roads caused by the winter storm as it moved out of Kentucky.
A woman and a 3-year-old boy were killed in an accident that officials say was caused by the icy roads in Montgomery County. Coroner Wallace Johnson said that Crystal Moler, 28, and her nephew, Jacob Cupps, 3, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on U.S. 460 near Camargo.
Johnson reported to the Herald-Leader that the crash took place at approximately 7:00 PM when Moler lost control of her 2000 Ford Mustang on the icy road. The car spun out and hit a Ford F-250 pickup truck. According to Johnson, Moler was wearing her seatbelt and the boy was in his car seat at the time of the accident.
Another fatal crash occurred on a freeway early Wednesday, when the driver hit an icy spot on an overpass and lost control of the vehicle, said Louisville Metro Police. The Courier-Journal reported that one man was killed in the accident and another person was injured. Police said that the man was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision. The driver was wearing his seatbelt and was transported to University Hopsital with only minor injuries.
Numerous schools in Kentucky closed classes Wednesday because of the slippery roads.
In Munfordville, another weather-related crash occurred, which shut down the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 in the cave region of Kentucky on Tuesday morning.
According to John McNece of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the crash at Munfordville took place just before dawn.
It was anticipated that the cleanup would last approximately four hours and there was no alternate route available. McNece said there was no alternate route because the other roads in the area are in worse condition than the interstate.
