December 22, 2011 – Owensboro, Ky. – A person was killed and another was injured when a car and a tractor trailer collided on Wednesday, December 21.
WAVE 3 reports that the incident happened at about 7:20 a.m. on U.S. 60 about 8 miles northeast of Owensboro. Officials said that Justin D. Deweese, 34, of Leitchfield, was driving eastbound on the highway when he attempted to pass another vehicle and crossed into the westbound lane.
Deweese’s vehicle was then struck nearly head-on by a westbound tractor trailer. The truck caught fire and spilled diesel out onto the roadway.
Deweese was killed in the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The tractor trailer’s driver, Bobby D. Young, 45, of Caneyville, was injured in the accident and had to be taken to an emergency room. His injuries are said to be minor.
Officials with the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office said that the highway was shut off to traffic, until Wednesday evening, while crews cleared the area and cleaned up the spilled diesel.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Kentucky Crash Statistics, there were 791 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Kentucky.
