Traffic Light Outage May Have Been Cause of Newtown Pike Semi Crash

Posted on Aug 19, 2010

August 19, 2010 - Lexington, KY - An early morning power outage may have been the cause of a truck crash in Lexington on August 11.

According to Kentucky.com the traffic lights at the intersection of Citation Blvd. and Newtown Pike were reported out at 1:19 a.m. with the accident occurring a minute later. Eranid Perez, 25, was the driver of the Oldsmobile Aurora that made a left turn onto Newtown Pike and was struck by a semi truck.

The truck hit the passenger side of the car, causing serious injuries to Nayali Roberllo, 24, the passenger. Both Roberllo and Perez had to be cut from their vehicle and taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.

Alcohol is not suspected as a factor, but toxicology reports are pending. Perez was cited for not having a driver's license or proof of insurance. Roberllo remains in serious condition while Perez was released after treatment of minor injuries.

The driver of the truck, William E. Reed, 52, is not a Lexington native and was most likely unaware that the intersection was supposed to have an active traffic light. He was uninjured and has not been cited. All vehicle occupants were wearing seat belts.

Kentucky Utilities confirmed that there had been an outage which was caused by an equipment malfunction. Power was restored to the 4,000 affected customers at 2:05 a.m.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 Kentucky Crash Statistics, there were 826 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Kentucky.
