April 7, 2011 – According to Kentucky.com, state investigations find that 18% of nursing homes with claims of abuse and neglect are valid. This recent report pertained to 2010 cases.
The report, Elder Abuse in Kentucky, indicated that out of 7,365 investigations of nursing home abuse or neglect, there was probable cause in 1,859 cases. Criminal charges were filed in only 316 of the cases, under the Kentucky Adult Protection Act.
While this is the first time that a report such as this has included statistical findings on state investigations, it spotlights the problems found in many nursing home facilities.
Investigations of this kind are challenging, as many times, victims of nursing home abuse or neglect aren’t able to tell others what happened. Additionally, finding evidence to support these claims can be difficult.
Meanwhile, many advocates would like to see improvement in the number of cases that face prosecution.
