July 29, 2011 – Knott County, Ky – A witness to a fatal pickup truck accident says that speeding is a serious problem on a stretch of Highway 550 East.
WYMT News spoke with James Stone, a resident who witnessed the 6th accident in the past year on the highway which runs past his house. This recent fatal accident took place on July 23 when a pickup truck collided with a car.
Charles Mosley, 66, was driving the pickup without headlights that evening when he struck a car driven by Antonio Tincher, 22. Stone and his brother and son went to check on the victims who were still alive while he called for a neighbor to contact 911.
Stone and his family stayed with the victims and attempted to render aid as they waited. Paramedics arrived, but both drivers died from their injuries. Kentucky State Police are investigating the accident. Meanwhile, Stone believes that something needs to be done about drivers going excessive speeds in the area.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2009 Kentucky Crash Statistics, there were 791 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Kentucky.
