Walgreens drugstore has had verdicts totaling $61 million delivered against it in four separate lawsuits for prescription error related injuries. In most of these cases the medication error committed by the pharmacy resulted in a death. The pharmacy chain has challenged these verdicts. Walgreens contends that it is coping with a pharmacists shortage. This has resulted in pharmacies relying more and more on pharmacy technicians who have far less training than a pharmacist to fill prescriptions. Many of the lawsuits involve medications that were dispensed by technicians rather than pharmacist. These cases have involved Walgreens filling the prescription with the wrong dose, wrong medication, or failing to warn about drug interactions.
