DUI Crash Kills Mouthcard Man and Injures Passenger

A fatal crash reportedly occurred in the early afternoon hours of Saturday March 8, 2014 in Pike County, Kentucky. Accident reports indicate that a two-vehicle accident occurred around 1:50 p.m. on US 460 in Fedscreek.

According to initial reports of the accident, 45-year-old Barry Shortridge of Mouthcard, Kentucky was driving west on US 460 when he reportedly lost control of his vehicle. His car reportedly went off the right side of the road and hit a guardrail. Mr. Shortridge then allegedly overcorrected his vehicle, reentered the roadway, crossed the center line, and hit an oncoming vehicle that was traveling eastbound.

The driver of the vehicle that Mr. Shortridge reportedly hit has been identified as 49-year-old Terry Sawyers of Mouthcard. Mr. Sawyers allegedly died in this Pike County crash and was pronounced dead at the accident scene. A passenger in Mr. Sawyers’ vehicle was reportedly taken to Pikeville Medical Center with injuries. The passenger’s name was not immediately released to the media. No other injuries or fatalities were reported to the media in the hours following this crash.

Mr. Shortridge was arrested for driving under the influence first offense and for leaving the scene of an accident. He was being held in the Pike County Detention Center. It has been reported that he will have a criminal court date later this year.

The Kentucky State Police are investigating this fatal Pike County crash.
